Our 2009 Fall Forum

Our 4th annual Fall Forum is scheduled for October. Last year we obtained funding to hire an Event Coordinator who reported to a Steering Committee of volunteers. We don't have funding this year, and our membership revenue is not sufficient to hire someone, so we need a committee with a volunteer Event Coordinator to do the planning and delivery of the annual Fall Forum.

The Fall Forum will not happen unless someone volunteers ASAP to be the Event Coordinator.

Media coverage of local cycling issues

The Local Media section of our website contains 7 items from the first three weeks in August: the Yellow Ribbon Greenway (St James), Ciclovia, bike lanes, a very positive editorial in the Free Press, and of course the ticketing of cyclists for treating STOP signs as YIELD signs.

We've created a web page of information about "STOP signs as YIELD signs for cyclists":

Ciclovia

Ciclovia, which means "bike way", is an event on Sunday September 13th that supports active transportation.

The entire north side of Broadway will be closed to motor-vehicle traffic from Osborne all the way to Main Street -– with a connection from Assiniboine Park all the way to The Forks, so that people can walk, bike, skate, or run on down!
Ciclovia will allow Winnipeg to showcase the best of its artists and musicians, to exhibit its cultural industries and parade the best of its urban features to itself and the world. It combines healthy living with arts and culture and engages citizens in active alternatives to motorized transportation, bringing life back to otherwise car-choked streets. And it does something else that is exceptional. It allows a city to dream of different ways of living well, of other community aspirations in an urban environment. What does it mean to have a significant stretch of a street free of cars and open to travel, entertainment, lighting displays, local restaurant fair, family activities, live music and new social possibilities?

SO everyone there is a workshop on brakes this weds the 19th here is the info:
Hello,

This Wednesday, August 19th, 7-9pm, the Bike Dump is hosting a hands-on workshop on how to repair common problems with side- and centre-pull brakes (the kind of brakes on most road, hybrid and cruiser bikes).

On Wednesday, Augsut 26th, 7-9pm, there will be another brake workshop. This one will focus on cantilever and linear-pull or "v" brakes (the kind of brakes on most mountain bikes and newer hybrid bikes).

These workshops are open to everyone, regardless of skill level.

there is also a workshop this weds at 6 at orioles bike cage on bike trailers at 6 the address is 444 burnell street. AT valour community center just north of st. matthews. THis is an informational night and no hands on work will be done but there are plans to get that started later as well.

Shukuno Rintendo Bicycles

Shukuno Rintendo Bicycles is a Japanese bicycle brand. Between 1996 and 1998 they produced a special series of power assited bicycles, 2 of them were the Fire Trick Bob and the Water Trick Bob. The Fire Trick Bob had a small turbine which produced 4.4 horsepower of thrust. The water and air tanks of the Water Trick Bob could generate enough thrust for 50 meters. (found at today and tomorrow)

anticipation of opening a bike dump-esque place there. It's all goin down
next sat, I'll be there fo sho, if anyone else is interested. here's his details
about the event;

We wont be getting too fancy on the 8th...time keeps tickin faster than we
(me and who else was that again?...) can plan. so were talking about a
bike maintenance fixem up sesh, and when you get there, we could have a
bike dump meeting... get all the kids together on it and then do some
planning for a bike event at the end of sept. which could include a parade
and a race. in the evening on the 8th (sat.) midnight mystery bike ride
and party/camping at barnsies (rosser ave east into the bushes).

BttF rep needed on the St Vital Ped/Cycling Bridge Study

The City of Winnipeg has initiated a committee to study a new pedestrian/cycling bridge that links the UofManitoba and St Vital. We are looking for a member to represent BttF on that committee. Monthly meetings starting on September 9th will be held in south Winnipeg. Please contact us if you are interested in this or would like more info.

Muddy Waters 100 (Green Leap Forward)

Green Leap Forward is a new umbrella initiative to encourage people to participate in physically active events and to try active transportation. Join thousands of Winnipeggers as they take a green leap forward.
The Muddy Waters 100 ride (now in its 15th year) has been added to Green Leap Forward. This ride has been greatly expanded this year with the addition of Habitat For Humanity and a start/finish location at The Forks. There will be rides of 25K, 60K, 100K, and 100 miles. Many hundreds of cyclists are expected to join the 200 that participated last year when the event was held outside the city and had much less promotion.

Hey everyone I will be putting on a workshop at the Orioles Bike Cage that is an introduction to bike mechanics. It will cover fitting a bike to yourself, regular maintenance, how to troubleshoot and assess a bike, as well as how to fix a flat tire. It is on Saturday July 18 at 2 until 5. If you or anyone else you know might be interested feel free to pass this message along. (Just a note it is for ladies trans and queer.)
Also I was wondering if there were any workshop topics taht people would like to see happen so that we could set another one up for Ladies and Trans night people.

found on Urban Velo, which I think got it from here it just shows how one must talk about police burtality..and this is my own personal opinion but i believe in this..Principles of the Revolution of Cycling:
1. Surrender is out of the question (to any cop or car or politician)
2. The recognition that cycling is not a crime must be completed.
3. We shall retain our right of an alternative mode of transportation.
4. We shall decide our own political destiny/cycling pathes.

Don't let the cops or cars or anyone push you around. Speak up! Speak out! Speak open! For someone out there probably had the same thing happen to them and are too scared speak up for they feel too alone too.

if you have concerns about a cop in Winnipeg I suggest going to Cop Watch http://winnipegcopwatch.org/

As for cars, get the license plate after you go file a complaint to the police, send it into urbansteed@gmail.com, and we will work on a list or offenders to cyclists.

Spring 2009 Bicycle Counts report

Jeremy Hull, Bike to the Future's research and statistics guru (and Provincial Policy Committee Director), has produced his 3rd annual spring bicycle counts report from bicycle count data that 34 of his volunteers have accumulated. The statistics and insight contained in this report are interesting, informative, and professional.

The inaugural Bikefest will be held on Sunday July 19th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Assiniboine Park. There will be representation from many different vendors in the city with bike buyers guides, technique instruction, repair clinics, free on-site repairs, and much more. If you are not watching it you should come out to Woodcock (confirmed in a couple of days if they will open up their shop early for people to come in and watch..) I personally have been watching since i was 10/11 (i spend my 11th birthday in the hospitable and was flipping through the channels and found it..and was hooked)..it has been 15 years. and for a good 3 years I did not even want to watch it...but 2009 seems to be the year to bring me back..and I am back baby! and so is my love for tour..

Peace Fest program for 26 – 28 June ‘09

The International Peace Festival has been held at the International Peace Garden since 1983. This weekend event brings people together from both sides of the border to enjoy each other’s company, enjoy music and games and share stories around creating a bright future of cooperation and sustainable innovation. No passport or new ID card is needed as you don’t need to go through international customs if you’re not going further than the Peace Garden. But you will need to report to your own border post on the way home.

Theme: Self-Reliance Together - Practical peacemaking with the earth, our community and ourselves.

Location: International Peace Garden Historic Lodge – north of Dunseith North Dakota and south of Boissevain, Manitoba.

Food: Friday Supper is potluck. The rest of the weekend food is provided - including vegetarian and vegan options.

Costs: Covered by donations from Participants and Businesses. Please add to the donations jar as generously as you are able. Also, the Peace Garden charges $10 per car to enter for the weekend.

Help inform Winnipeggers about a critical gap in the City's Active Transportation network and get a free ice cream!
Join us this Thursday June 25th at noon at the South Osborne Underpass for a press conference highlighting the sudden and fundamental change in the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor.
Background
For years the rapid transit project has been mandated to include an integrated Active Transportation Pathway. In the current plans, the pathway has become disconnected by the South Osborne Underpass. The fragmented remnants of the pathway will lead motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians into conflict.
Paul Jordan, Chair of the Winnipeg Trails Association, along with representatives from the Winnipeg Trails Association, The Forks, the Prairie Pathfinders walking club, Bike to the Future, Winnipeg Rapid Transit Coalition, Manitoba Cycling Association, and One Green City are undertaking an awareness campaign to inform the public of this fundamental change. Paul and others will hold a short press conference on the Active Transportation component of the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor project followed by a walk through the underpass and free Banana Boat ice cream on the other side.
This is one of the most critical "choke points" of the Active Transportation Network. If must be addressed now.

Planning meeting for Bike to Work Day 2009

The planning for Bike to Work Day 2009 has begun, and we are excited about an event that will be bigger and better than last year. We plan on having more developed energy stations with food and fun at locations around the city, a volunteer celebration at the end of the day, and of course the pancake breakfast at The Forks.

Which should be interesting for the Polizi over there likes to stand at cross roads and take fixed gear bikes away. Hopefully that will happen to no one (if you understand German or just like watching tv media you can't understand then check this out )

This begs the question what defines a cycling culture as a hazard ? For Germany has a large one, cycling paths everywhere (inside the city and out), you see lots of people always riding their bikes. Yet fixed gear is a no no. Yet here in Canada with no bike paths fixed gear riders don't have to worry about the polizi taking their bike away, but instead worry about where they ride. MIddle solution anyone?

In the mean time, let's all learn a little German (Berliner German) to get in the spirit for ECMC..

Rides are NOT supported therefore be prepared to care for yourself. Vehicles will not be allowed to follow the riders. Outside support may be taken only at the designated control points.

All rides start on time- rain, snow or shine (prepare for the worst, hope for the best). Route cards and maps will be handed out up to 15 minutes prior to start time- please be early. Route cards must be signed at a business establishment the designated control towns. The rides are not races- if you arrive prior to the control open time, you must wait for the time before proceeding. If you arrive after the close time, your ride will not be certified.

The cards will be certified and returned to you at the end of the season. Super Randonneur medals will be awarded to all riders completing the series of 200km, 300km, 400km, and 600km rides in the same year.

We've been able to book Broadway Community Centre for Saturday, March 21st at 4 - 8 p.m. for indoor bike polo!!! (that's this Saturday).

We also have it for Saturday, April 4 at 4 - 8 p.m. as well. Maybe we will try to plan an evening festivity of some sort on April 4. Maybe movies, maybe karaoke, maybe dancing, definitely food and drink. What do you all think, and where??

I won't be attending cause I am a celiac and do not belong to the Olympia Cycling Club, however it might be interesting. I don't know if you have to be a part of the Olympia Cycling Club but it does say something to that effect and it is not hosted with other shops.

Also looks like there is another women's group in the works, wonder if their women mechanic is hosting that idea or maybe this is just divide an conquer technique between all the shops? Who knows. Guess the only way to find out is for you to go.

Free Lunch? Well, not really. You are, however, invited to a pasta dinner at Deluca’s Fine Foods, hosted by the Olympia Cycling Club.

The Olympia Cycling Club puts on mountain bike races, the Wednesday night series at Bur Oak, as well as endurance events like Reach the Beach and the infamous Red Ass 300.

The purpose of the dinner is to enjoy an evening with as many cyclists as possible, and to expand the scope of the Olympia Cycling Club. Although you could just have dinner and leave, we hope that you will stay a while and give us your input on a couple of things we’ve been talking about. Some of these are:

. Bike racing - planning events, high performance training, travel for racing
. Riding for fun and fitness (events and activities other than traditional racing)
. Olympia Feminin - the cycling group for women
. Bikes as transportation - cycling advocacy & community development
. Starting a Kids of Mud group for west Winnipeg

And did I mention that you will get to rub shoulders with cycling legends like Scot (one T) Miller and former Olympian and senior bike courier Lindsay Gauld?

Orioles Bike Cage

The Orioles Bike Cage (they call it a cage because it is a cage) is on the cusp of "opening". The OBC is a community-owned bike repair station, with used parts and skills training available for those in need and willing to help out. The permissions and insurance and all that for the space are in place, and last week FGBC'ers Bill and Teagan A. and I, and a host of other west Winnipeggers got the space cleaned out and a bunch of tools and gear dragged in.

The opening hours for the space are shaping up as Thursday nights, after 7 p.m. At least for now. I could see a weekend shift being added once warmer weather hits. This Thursday (and for the next couple, probably) will probably be set up work - getting tools, workbenches, etc. sorted out. It's a pretty loose, take-all-comers sort of a collective, so anyone who has a spare hour to help out would be most certainly welcome.

Orioles Community Club (part of the larger ensemble of Valour Communuty Centres) is at the corner of Burnell and St. Matthews, and the OBC is at the back of the gym.

The Manitoba Student Transportation Network and Natural Cycle are partnering to offer a free bicycle mechanics course for teachers and community volunteers wanting to develop their repair and bike building skills.

Join us for two 6-hour sessions on consecutive Sundays starting March 1st at 10:30a.m. It is expected that interested participants will contribute by volunteering in their community or school to help fix bikes. We are offering this course free-of-charge because we believe in sustainability, and the bicycle as an efficient and accessible form of transportation for all age-groups and all income levels. So, sign up, have fun, and share your passion for bicycles where you can, when you can.

No previous mechanical knowledge is necessary. The course is a hands-on overview of every system of the bicycle and the key principles of mechanics. All tools, materials and bikes are provided.
In order to spread this opportunity amongst the many community bicycle projects in Winnipeg and interested school programs, we ask that you complete the form attached. Instructor to student ratio is 3:1. If we cannot accommodate everyone, we will keep your name on reference for the next course.

Ahem. So you may be aware to a greater or lesser degree that I work for a bike courier co-operative here in Winnipeg called Natural Cycle. As we consist of a bunch of young folks who a) don't know how to market to the corporate world, and b) like fun things, I'm excited to announce that we have come up with a valentine's day spectacularriffic offer!

Even if you don't live in Winnipeg and are receiving this, all you need to do is know someone in Winnipeg that you would like to send a cute, bike-themed valentine's greeting to. None of this pressure to find a mate and bowl them over with romance and flowers and expensive stuff, just the ability to express sweet sentiment to someone you think deserves a boost in their day! Plus, you can support this great business that a lot of great people are dedicating a lot of time to.

Here's how it works: you can choose from a number of options (outlined below), reply before February 11th (next Wednesday), and on the 13th (note: we don't work on Saturday, so the delivery won't actually be ON valentine's day, but then again, your valentine probably won't be at work then either), your valentine's package(s) will be delivered by a bicycle messenger (aka cupid). 2. Personalized Valentines card delivery - you can choose (or have us choose) a card, write (or have us write) a personalized message to whoever you're sending it to, and then we deliver it on the 13th!

- talk to me if you want to send out several; I'm sure we could work out a fair price deal for that

3. Organic chocolate package - this includes the above-mentioned valentine's card, as well as 2 chocolate hearts (each about the size of the palm of your hand) from Organic Planet Worker Co-op. They're real delicious, solid chocolate, and as we all know, hearts=love.

4. Poetry reading or singing telegram! This is the ultimate package - if you order this, a costumed courier will deliver everything in package 3 (card, chocolate), PLUS, a freakin' singing telegram!
