Meeting Minutes for Women's Group
One cold and winter night in the deepest part of the outskirts of winnipeg (if you live in wosley or downtown you tend to think this) a couple women got together. In attendance were: Jay, Katie, Karen, Sandra, and Shona. To discuss a women's riding group.
First it started off that casual ride should happen once a week, and epic rides happening once a month. Though we could see Shona's eyes full of fear at the word "commit". Tuse and Wed were decided, however later in the discussion it was decided that the new electronic device of internet would be a good way to contact people for more beer/ice cream oriented rides. These rides would not be booked in but more laced about when people felt they would want people to ride with them.
At the possibility of having people together to teach skills in a unheirarchical manner katie mind started to turn..thinking how ever revolution needs costumes. She then said "costumes are needed to this unstructured non-lead shared supportive women's group!" Jay jumped up with glee as Karen and Shona clapped hands.
However, Katie then took on a serious tone, but we need to learn road rules and how to ride with others. Like those roadies, who tap their butts and point to things in the road. It was all agreed the group would make up their own rules, like there is a pothole and time to get ice cream.
This then lead to Shona suggesting to ride with FOG and in the cyclocross season to set up barriers and learn how to jump over them and maybe even have a training budy....(as the readers can see, this noncommitted anarchy driven rider wants commitment and structure, so confusing it is) She also started talking about doing roller rides in someone's basement or outside when it was warm, and maybe go to Woodcock once a month.
The women thought long and hard about this then said, if you want that go to Velodonas. Shona agreed this group being formed was more for fun and celebration of being a women on a bike.
A name was suggested then for this fun loving riding group who still wanted to have an edge (possibility of edge for racing), it was suggested Bikes and Beyond Babes, B and B Babes, the Girlfriends...a name was not really decided...for what is in a name?
It was also looked into by Sandra about insurance. Though it was decided no club fee would be a good club fee. That if people wanted insurance they would buy a $110 MCA license.
In the end fitness and fun rides seem to come out of this meeting. Costumes and riding rules would be learned along with other skills women could bring. Corsets and homemade t-shirts would be included but not required to ride. Beer and ice cream would be a must in the summer.
With that the women went their different ways, filtering out of Bikes and Beyond promising to meet another day....
